We were just stuck for a title – we don’t really believe there is anything bad or ugly about barcode technology. In fact, quite the opposite is true. We have been accused of having a slightly questionable or obsessive fascination.  “Mmmmm the way your powerful red laser seductively glances off those black and white stripes…”

So the good; what makes barcodes good? There are two basic advantages to scanning a barcode over manual data entry: Speed, and Accuracy. Scanning a 12 character barcode is 20 times quicker than entering it on a keyboard. The error rate for typing can be up to 7 magnitudes of order greater, depending on the type of barcode scanner used. A data entry error will translate into additional costs for a business which could range from the cost of re-keying the data to something catastrophic. Your barcode scanning solution will be paid for rapidly though savings in time and negated said catastrophes.  What could be bad or ugly about that?

Go on - Barcode everything!

Entrance tickets or invites can be easily barcoded so that they can be validated before allowing the holder to enter invites-only events, sports arenas, cinemas, theatres, fairgrounds, transportation etc. This can allow the proprietor to identify duplicate or fraudulent tickets more easily, analyse attendance/entrance statistics and have another excuse to wield a laser scanner – woohoooo!
